"When I contacted Dr. Wicks about contributing to his work on healthcare research, I did not anticipate our work turning into a practical, real-world project. Working together on Herbalyst, an iOS app dedicated to promoting herbal teas and their benefits, allowed me to gain hands-on experience in the realm of app development and learn how the design process works from start to finish. This very closely resembled the product design and development process seen in the industry.
In the early stages, I worked closely with Dr. Wicks and Ms. Debra Griffin (PPX-TEC) to identify the app's core goals and features of the app. I had to translate their ideas into features I could build into the app. After designing an initial prototype, I sent my work to them for review.
One of the most challenging parts of the project was integrating feedback from both Dr. Wicks and early testers. While I initially thought the app's functionality would be the priority, I quickly learned that how users interact with the app—its flow, responsiveness, and tone—was equally critical. I spent weeks refining the UI/UX, designing features like a detailed tea profile view and a personalized tracker that allows users to log their experiences and preferences. Debugging the backend while ensuring a seamless frontend experience also gave me invaluable practice in building cohesive apps through full-stack development. This skill is especially applicable to my future career goals.
Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of the project was seeing how my technical skills could directly contribute to something that helps people. I was able to publish my first app on the App Store, and using the skills I learned during this experience, I secured my first internship in the industry. I cannot thank Dr. Wicks enough for his support during every step of this process; his guidance was the most significant factor influencing the success of this project." — Developer's Testimonial, 2024
